Movie Quiz--Film Stills

This idea is taken from Darren's blog ( http://frozenbanana57.blogspot.com/ ) because Darren is a trendsetter and fad-forger.

The concept is simple: look at the vidcaps below and tell me in the comments section what movie the picture comes from. To make this genuine, don't use Google or other such sites to search contextual clues, don't look at my Facebook profile (where most of these films are listed), don't read other comments before commenting yourself. I realize that these kinds of tests aren't simply about film savvy, but sometimes an understanding of the person posting--if we have ever talked about movies, you'll probably be able to figure all these out, even if you haven't seen a few of them.

None of these movies are overly obscure; most are popular and critically acclaimed.
Some of these are real softballs, some are intentionally difficult, there are a few that will surprise me if they are identified (I couldn't have done it). These stills represent some, but of course not all, of my favorite films. Let's see what you got...

Well...these are tough...I'll kick out the easy ones, cause those are the only ones I'll get.

the second one is Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. (Bonus points for the entire title???)

The hockey game scene is Swingers. "It's not so much me as Roenick, he's good. When I'm not here will you practice?"

The angel statue is No Country???

I can picture in my mind kids throwing that hot dog vender wagon down some stairs, but can't put my finger on it.

The hood ornament through the crowd...I believe that is also Empire of the Sun.

The last one, I think, is after Marlon Brando walks into the work after getting roughed up by the clam sauce eatin' union thugs. On the Waterfront. "Oh Challee...they done Challeee!!!"

The rest are wild guesses....looks like a bloody rope from a boxing ring?

The one shooting the football has the tone, color, and feel of the Outsiders...but don't remember.

That looks a little bit like Steve McQueen...the original thomas crown affair??

Welll...I give up for now...

Many of the rest will drive me crazy because they are familiar, but I can't put my digital finger on them....

Argh. So hard. And yet.....I just think I need to stare at them longer. The one with the map on the guy's head.........Dustin Hoffman driving to Berkeley to call off a wedding? Way off? Way off. Sure of it. Ungh.......the hotel map I swear is No Country for Old Men.

Hm. The woman in the frame...I know you wouldn't post a still from The Ring.........Amelie?

Sorry Joe. I am your loser friend. Maybe if I sleep on these images. I was hoping you'd throw in a little Journey of Natty Gann. Let me think, let me think. Give me a chance.

Also, I want to play next. You or Darren should let me pick the stills next round.

wow. i didn't think these would be so baffling. sleep on it...you'll both get some more of these.

i guess they might be the most obscure shots, even though most are from well-known films.

i was having a hard time finding stills i really enjoyed, so a lot of these I captured myself...just broke out the DVD collection, threw them in the Mac and rolled.

What a depressing spectacle. Marriage narrowed and deepened my library to the Mtv-esque and the Mt. Dew-ish. Hope to recover with a nice Joe Grif volley once the key is provided.

Okay, #15 is Sleepers, #18 is The Birds(?), and #20 is Empire of the Sun.
p.s. this is a message to both you and Darren: use more stills from movies that I've seen, like Crossroads and Beethoven II.

zank-you opened up some more. the key is forthcoming.. ..

hound-avatar change? unexpected. i have been thinking along those lines for some time. you seem to have gotten the most so far (but one of yours is outta place)...i think you'll kick yourself in the crotch when the key comes out (you've proven that it is possible, if laying down the right way)

Val-i did have a handful of REAL cinema classics in there (Ghost Dad, Sister Act 2, Problem Child...) but they seemed a little too refined sitting alongside the others. this quiz game aint over yet, and you'll love the next installment.

Sorry, now I'm cheating and reading Zufelt's. DAMN IT! How did I not get Return to Oz?

Who am I? *stares blankly into a mirror, self-image paradigm-shifting*

oops you're right.

I listed:

14. In The Name of the Father

it should be:

16. In The Name of the Father

a miscount not a misguess.

you are a genius. pure and simple. genius. i didn't know i could laugh that loud publicly.

"there's something about mary" made me nearly rupture...

man, i can't wait to 'hang'.

Mark Clements said...

The "Mary" one elicited the same reaction from myself when it popped into my head. It's my personal favorite as well.

Mark, you are my most clever friend.

how is #2 The Notebook? being the only one i think i've seen (numerous times) on that list that i can remember ... maybe i should delete this comment now.

Not joking here, but my original guess on number six would have truly been the Wizard, but once I saw Beeser's confident response (I cheated) I kept that guess to myself. Plus, if you're going to show a still of the Wizard, you have to include the virtual reality glove. You have to.

Driving Miss Daisy also made me laugh.
